El voluntariado generalmente se considera una actividad altruista en la que una persona o un grupo presta servicios sin obtener ningún beneficio económico o social “para beneficiar a otra persona, grupo u organización”. El voluntariado también es reconocido por su capacidad para desarrollar habilidades y, a menudo, su objetivo es promover la bondad o mejorar la calidad de vida.
El voluntariado puede tener beneficios positivos tanto para el voluntario como para la persona o la comunidad a la que sirve. También busca establecer contactos para posibles empleos. Muchos voluntarios reciben capacitación específica en las áreas en las que trabajan, como la medicina, la educación o el rescate de emergencias. Otros prestan servicio según sea necesario, por ejemplo, en respuesta a un desastre natural.
